Written Candidacy Exams—Basic Requirement

Written candidacy exams, or the basic requirement, must be attempted by the end of the first year, meaning the summer session beginning with Classical Physics (CP) the week after Commencement and Quantum Mechanics (QM) the week following the July 4th holidays. The October exam session is mainly for retakes during the second full week of the month. To postpone exams from summer to fall, you must meet with Frank Porter and have a really good excuse. First year students may elect to take either CP or QM written exams during the October exam session at the beginning of 1st term, or during the summer session prior to matriculation if they are registered for summer research. Written exams must be successfuly completed by the end of the second year of graduate study. Write to the Physics Graduate Office for the current exam schedule.
