Postdoctoral position - IPAC with Lee Armus

IPAC, part of the Physics, Math, and Astronomy Division at Caltech, provides science operations, user support, data and archive services, and scientific vision to maximize discovery with observatories both in space and on the ground. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in extragalactic astrophysics to work on JWST observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN).
AGN can have significant impact on the evolution of their host galaxies through feedback in the form of gas winds and radio jets which can be seen on kpc scale, encompassing the entire galaxy. This opportunity is for a postdoctoral fellow to work with Lee Armus and collaborators at Caltech and JPL to reduce, analyze, and pubilsh Cycle 1 JWST integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopic data for a sample of high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) and obscured AGN.  HzRGs are the only AGN population in which quasar mode feedback, radio mode feedback, and the host galaxies can be characterised simultaneously. The diffraction-limited resolution of JWST and two-dimensional coverage with the NIRSpec IFU provides a 10-fold improvement in resolution over existing observations and will allow us to map the stellar, gas, and excitation components of distant HzRGs all at once for the first time. 
Experience with integral field spectroscopy is highly desirable, and familiarity with AGN, stellar population synthesis, and/or dust modeling is also preferred. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to pursue their own independent research programs, and will have IPAC institutional access to the Palomar 200-inch telescope.
Position Details:
- Lead analysis of the JWST data.
- Work with co-I's on analysis of ancillary data from other telescopes, e.g., ALMA.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Publish papers using JWST and other data and conduct independent research.

Skills and Qualifications:
- By the starting date, a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or equivalent, in an area relevant to the job details.
- Ability to work in an active team environment, including good written and verbal communication.
- Experience in the study of active with ground and/or space-based telescopes.
- Experience with infrared imaging and spectroscopy, especially analysis of emission line galaxies. Reduction and calibration of infrared spectroscopic data from JWST is particularly relevant.

Hiring Range
Starting at $69,000 per annum
