W. N. Lacey Lectureship in Chemical Engineering

Celiac Disease: Chemical Approaches to Unravel—and Treat—a Lifelong Autoimmune Disorder (General Lecture)
Chaitan Khosla, Wells H. Rauser and Harold M. Petiprin Professor and Professor of Chemistry and, by courtesy, of Biochemistry, Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Stanford University,

Celiac disease is a lifelong, inheritable T cell-driven disorder that is triggered by gluten, a ubiquitous and nutritionally important protein source in the human diet. Chemical approaches have yielded new insights into the pathogenesis of this widespread but overlooked disease. In turn, these insights are also being translated into disease-specific therapeutic approaches. My lecture will recount a series of fundamental and translational advances made in our laboratory through the lens of a remarkable 33-residue bioactive peptide derived from dietary gluten.
