3D Superconducting Microwave Resonators for Ultra Low Field Applications

Lunch & Refreshments served in 114 E. Bridge at 11:45am

Macroscopic superconducting microwave resonators of extremely high quality factors Q > 10^10-11 are a state-of-the-art choice for particle accelerators. Thousands of such superconducting RF (SRF) resonators of various resonant frequencies of 0.1-9 GHz are in operation in large scale accelerators, i.e. CEBAF, SNS, and coming online in newly constructed ones, i.e. European XFEL, LCLS-II at SLAC, FRIB etc. Interestingly, cavities of such high quality factors are highly desired in various non-accelerator applications requiring a different regime of operation (ultra low field, ultra low temperature) such as quantum computing, dark sector searches etc. I will present here the relevant effort ongoing at Fermilab and associated physics and materials science problems being tackled in this context.

Alex Romanenko – Technical Division Head – Superconducting RF Sector, Fermilab

Alexander Romanenko is the associate head for superconducting radio‐frequency technology and magnets in the Fermilab Technical Division. Romanenko's research focuses on advances in accelerator science, and in particular innovations in superconducting accelerating cavities, which are the structures that transfer energy to particle beams as they pass through. It was for this work that he was received a DOE Early Career Research Award in 2011. In 2017 he won the U.S. Particle Accelerator School Prize for Achievement in Accelerator Physics and Technology. Romanenko received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and joined Fermilab in 2009 as a Peoples fellow.
