Quantifying virtual properties of 3-manifold groups
The study of virtual properties of 3-manifold groups has been central to many major developments in 3-manifold topology over the past decade. I will discuss how many of these properties played a role in the work of Agol and Wise in the resolution of the Virtual Haken conjecture and Virtual Fibering conjecture. In particular, the VHC and the VFC both follow from the Virtually Special theorem. I will also discuss recent results in quantifying virtually special for a class of hyperbolic 3-manifold groups.
