Teaching Demonstration -- Program Decomposition with Functions
Melissa Hovik, University of Washington (Seattle),
Speaker's Bio:
Melissa Hovik is graduating from the CS Master’s program at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington (Seattle). At UW, her TA experience has included introductory courses, web development, security, programming languages, and theory foundations. Recently, she taught the web development course for which she has contributed to curriculum design over the last few years. Her primary teaching interest is introducing Computer Science and its interdisciplinary applications to students with diverse interests through courses such as CS 1, CS 2, and web development.

The talk will introduce program decomposition with functions and program scope in Python, as an example of an early lecture in a CS 1 course open to students without prior experience in programming. Decomposition and debugging strategies will also be discussed to motivate foundational problem-solving skills for students.
