The binary neutron star merger GW170817 was the first gravitational wave event with electromagnetic counterparts. This was the beginning of gravitational astronomy and ushered in fresh perspectives of study for gamma-ray bursts. From the geometry of relativistic jets and emission mechanisms therein to populations of sources and their use for precision cosmology, I will illustrate recent developments with work of my own and collaborators. I will also discuss how near-future advances in gamma-ray burst observations and multi-messenger data collecting will support this new era of gamma-ray burst studies.
