Physics Colloquium

Magnetic power of neutron stars
Andrei Beloborodov, Columbia University,

Neutron stars are (by far) the strongest known magnets in the universe. Their magnetic energy powers spectacular phenomena, including X-ray bursts and mysterious fast radio bursts. The bursts come from sudden dissipation of magnetic energy with huge luminosities. A basic physics question is why and how the energy is released, and how the observed emission is produced. Some progress in understanding this activity will be described. Similar mechanisms can power electromagnetic counterparts of neutron star mergers.
