Thoughts on the Potential of Quantum Computing for Nuclear Physics Grand Challenge Problems

Abstract: Nuclear Physics is a mature field of research into the properties and dynamics of physical systems that span an enormous range of lengths scales, from the subatomic to the cosmological. Conventional computing resources, that are expected to enter the exascale during the next 5 years, are required to describe the nucleon, nuclei and their interactions, supernova and extreme astrophysical environments through a range of techniques including lattice gauge theory and quantum many-body theory.  There are quantities and systems of importance to nuclear physics research that will likely remain beyond the reach of exascale computing capabilities, including important time-dependent systems, finite-density systems, neutrino transport in dense matter.  Quantum Computing may have the potential to address such systems with resources that won't scale exponentially with system size or desired precision.  I will discuss important problems in NP that have the potential to be addressed through Quantum Computing.
