Mathematics Colloquium

From Feynman diagrams to commutative diagrams
Owen Gwilliam, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, U Mass, Amherst,
Factorization algebras are local-to-global objects on manifolds that play a role in quantum field theory akin to the role of sheaves in geometry. This talk will introduce them and explain how they provide a bridge from perturbative quantum field theory to higher algebra. Chern-Simons theory will provide a running example, and the talk will culminate in explaining joint work with K. Costello and J. Francis in which we recover quantum groups from the factorization algebra of Chern-Simons theory.
