Solving nonlinear elliptic equations in numerical relativity with the SpECTRE code

The challenge to compute initial data for general-relativistic simulations involves numerically solving coupled nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. For the SpECTRE numerical relativity code we develop a scalable elliptic solver to support the evolutions with accurate initial data. First, I outline our discontinuous Galerkin internal-penalty scheme to discretize the elliptic equations, highlighting differences to the scheme for evolution equations in SpECTRE. Second, I present the numerical technology that we employ to solve the equations on supercomputers and demonstrate the code’s ability to solve for single and (preliminary) binary neutron-star initial data in general relativity.
