Mathematics Colloquium

Many problems in Differential Geometry can be described as the study of critical points of some geometric functionals. I will give a review of two particular instances: in a first part I will talk about the existence theory of minimal hypersurfaces, which has enjoyed many advancements recently, and in a second part I will discuss the notion of minimal volumes of smooth manifolds and the problem of finding corresponding minimizing metrics.
