High Energy Physics Seminar

Dressing and Tuning-Dressing of a spin 1/2 system
Guiseppe Bevilacqua, DSFTA - University of Siena (Italy),

The seminar is devoted to discuss how an intense oscillating magnetic field modifies (dresses) the Larmor frequency of a precessing spin, initially set by a smaller static field. After a short introduction about the mathematical tools needed to study the dynamical Larmor equations, I will first discuss the single-field dressing (a configuration studied since the late Sixties), and then the new tuning-dressing mechanism introduced recently (PRL 125, 093203 (2020)). The latter is obtained when a second oscillating magnetic field is added to the previous ones, e.g. perpendicularly to both the static and dressing fields. This secondary time-dependent field enables a fine tuning of the qubit response and the long-time dynamics is described by an anisotropic effective magnetic field, which constitutes an innovative handle for the system full engineering. Through a low-order harmonic mixing, the bichromatic driving generates a synthetic static field that modifies the system dynamics, and might find application in a variety of experiments based on Larmor precession.
