Rise and fall of magnetic fields in relativistic astrophysics
Jonathan Zrake, Postdoctoral Fellow, Kavli Institute for Particle Physics (KIPAC), Stanford University,

Magnetized plasmas underlie the universe's most energetic radiative processes, and exist at all scales - from planetary to cosmological. I will address, at an introductory level, aspects of turbulent dynamo, freely decaying magnetic turbulence, and magneto-static equilibria. I will discuss how recent progress made in these areas, largely with the aid of simulations, bears heavily on our understanding of gamma-ray bursts, accretion systems, the Crab nebula, and binary neutron star mergers.
