David Gabai,
Hughes-Rogers Professor of Mathematics,
Mathematics,
Princeton University,
We start by surveying the state of topology pre-Poincare and then discuss some of Poincare's remarkable seminal and fundamental contributions to topology during the period 1892-1912. We indicate their huge impact on subsequent research as well as some open problems flowing from it.
