Physics Colloquium

Quantum materials on the mesoscale
Philip Moll, Max Planck Institute for Structure and Dynamics of Matter,

Quantum materials encompass central themes of interacting electron physics and topology which promise a wealth of unconventional electronic responses and functionality. They are researched immensely in bulk materials and thin films, which include epitaxy or van der Waals stacking. The region between these limits presents an underexplored field of rich physics on the mesoscale, commonly for 3D structures in the 10-0.1mm size range. Here, confined geometries become important for collective phenomena without quantizing the single-particle momenta yet. Designing the vessel for the interacting liquid has remarkable responses on their responses. I will review recent technological advances in Focused Ion Beam based shaping of single crystals, and discuss the physics of microscopically shaped Kagome metals, heavy fermion superconductors and geometrically tailored vortex matter.
