Flight of the Fruit Fly: Life at Intermediate Reynolds Numbers
Itai Cohen, professor of physics, Cornell University,
Speaker's Bio:
Itai Cohen received his B.S. in Physics from University of California at Los Angeles and completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Chicago in 2001. He took a post-doctoral associate position at Harvard University before joining the Cornell faculty as an Assistant Professor of Physics in 2005. Prof. Cohen’s research investigates how incorporating structure into fluids at various length scales affects their macroscopic flow properties. His research investigates systems including Newtonian fluids, liquid crystals, colloidal suspensions, insect wings, and bio-polymer networks. While these materials are ubiquitous and can be found in any kitchen, understanding their out-of-equilibrium behavior and non-linear response to applied stresses remains one of the biggest challenges in Physics.
