Graphene Mechanical Resonators and Applications

Made of only one sheet of carbon atoms, graphene is the thinnest yet strongest material ever tested. Guaranteed by the superior electrical and excellent mechanical properties, graphene is the ideal building block for NanoElectroMechanical Systems (NEMS). However, the small signal associated with the miniature size makes efficient electrical measurement very challenging.

In my talk, I will first discuss different electrical readout techniques for graphene mechanical resonators, and their properties upon changes in temperature and mass. Then, I will demonstrate the applications of graphene resonators for two purposes: one as sensitive tools to measure the chemical potential oscillation of graphene in applied magnetic field, and another as active elements to build self-sustaining mechanical oscillators.
