See a Supernova!

Want to see something out of this world? How about something that's out of this GALAXY?!

Caltech Astronomers of the Palomar Transient Factory team have recently discovered a Type Ia supernova PTF11kly in the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101). It is so bright that it is visible with a small telescope, and the Caltech Astronomy Outreach team is offering you the chance to catch a glimpse from the Cahill Rooftop Observatory! Supernovae are extremely rare and bright. They are also one of the most important tools for measuring the shape and age of the universe. It was the study of Type Ia supernovae that led to the discovery of Dark Energy—the mysterious interaction that is driving the universe apart!

This is the brightest such supernova in decades, and it won't stay bright for long, so come to the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at 8 p.m. this Friday, September 9. You'll learn more about these fascinating events and even catch some extra-galactic supernova photons on the back on your retinas! This event is open to all Caltech students, faculty, staff, and families; Caltech astronomers will be on hand to operate the telescope and provide background information.
