Special Seminar

Towards realistic modelling of binary neutron star mergers
Filippo Galeazzi, Postdoctoral Fellow, Institut für Theoretische Physik, J.W. Goethe - Universität Frankfurt am Main,

The merger of two neutron stars is considered one of the most promising astrophysical events in which to test the models of nuclear matter in regimes that are unattainable in laboratory experiments. In addition to the bulk properties of the neutron stars, such as mass and radius, also the details of their equation of state, are expected to be imprinted in the electromagnetic emission and gravitational wave signal produced by these events.  However, extracting such insights from observations requires sophisticated numerical simulations of these complicated systems.

I will give an overview on recent developments of state-of-the-art numerical simulations of binary mergers which include equations of state for dense matter, neutrino radiation, magnetic fields and neutron-star spin effects.
