Special Seminar

The Star Formation Main Sequence in the Illustris Simulation
Martin Sparre, PhD student, Dark Cosmology Centre, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen,

NOTE UNUSUAL DAY - THURSDAY

The star formation main sequence is a tight relation between the star formation rate and the stellar mass of star-forming galaxies, which is established in a large number of observational works.  In this talk I show that the galaxies in the Illustris hydrodynamical simulation follow such a relation, and that the relation is in excellent agreement with observations at z=0 and z=4.  In between these redshifts, there are, however, small but significant disagreements between Illustris and real observations.  I discuss the potential reasons for these disagreements, which could e.g. be IMF variation or the timescale over which expelled gas is reincorporated into galaxies.  I also discuss the relation between star formation properties of galaxies and the growth of dark matter halos and find that most stars are formed in 1012 solar mass halos at z<4.
