Taussky-Todd Lecture Series II: Convexity and subconvexity bounds for automorphic periods

I will describe how to use representation theory (of the simplest group
$SL(2,\mathbb{R})$) in order to get highly non-trivial subconvexity bounds
for some automorphic periods and for the corresponding $L$-functions
