Close-in Planets: Warm Jupiters, Super-Earths, and Exo-Mercuries
Eugene Chiang, Professor, Astronomy and Earth and Planetary Science, U.C. Berkeley,

Radial velocity and transit surveys have revealed that Sun-like stars are orbited by a kaleidoscopic variety of planetary systems at distances < 1 AU. We discuss three different problems: (1) the origin of warm (not hot) Jupiters, with orbital periods between 10 and 300 days; (2) how super-Earths, with sizes between 1 and 4 Earth radii, acquire their atmospheres; and (3) how Moon-sized planets with sub-day periods meet their fiery end.
