Physics Colloquium

Instruments for the exploration of the Universe and the brain
Günther Dissertori, ETH Zürich,

Particle Physics has made numerous scientific and technological achievements,

including a major discovery, since the start of the Large Hadron Collider, ten years ago.

The field is now at a critical point, facing the exploration of the unknown,  such as the particle origin of dark matter or other phenomena beyond its Standard Model. Which future infrastructures and instruments are best placed to tackle this challenge? And how does the development  of such particle physics instrumentation affect other fields?

I will discuss  the current landscape of the field and related strategy discussions that are taking place in Europe right now.

I will further show two concrete examples of transfer of particle detector technology
and know-how to the fields of pre-clinical and clinical bio-medical imaging,
in particular Positron Emission Tomography.
