IQIM Postdoctoral and Graduate Student Seminar

Narrow transparency and collective emission in an ensemble of rare-earth ions coupled to a nanophotonic cavity
Mi Lei, Graduate Student, Faraon Group,

IQIM Seminar followed by lunch

Abstract: Light-matter interfaces based on emitters coupled to a nanophotonic cavity are attractive candidates for quantum technologies such as quantum memories and transducers. High cooperativity is needed for these applications to realize impedance matching for high efficiency. Here, we study an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of Ytterbium-171 ions doped in yttrium orthovanadate coupled to a nanophotonic cavity with high cooperativity. In this talk, I will present our observation of a narrow transparency window in the cavity reflection spectrum. Unlike EIT, where the transparency is due to the destructive interference between dressed states, the transparency here results from the destructive interference between pairs of two-level emitters across the inhomogeneous line. Meanwhile, coherent excitation of the system within this window enables us to observe superradiance and subradiance
