Low-latency detection of gravitational-wave signals with GstLAL

The GstLAL search pipeline has been instrumental in low-latency identification of gravitational-wave signals since the first observing run of LIGO-Virgo. This pipeline was specifically developed to enable early-warning detection of gravitational-wave sources to facilitate multi-messenger follow-up campaigns by producing candidates in real time through time-domain matched-filtering. This was successfully accomplished with the detection of the first binary neutron star merger, GW170817. In this talk, I will describe the main features of GstLAL that accelerate trigger generation, and discuss the ranking statistic used for identification of gravitational-wave candidates in real time. I will also briefly discuss new developments to the search pipeline that are in progress for the next observing run of LIGO-Virgo-Kagra. The upcoming observing run brings us exciting prospects for multi-messenger astronomy given the anticipated sensitivity increase of the detectors.
