Physics Colloquium

Black holes and random matrices
Stephen Shenker, Stanford University,

One hallmark of quantum chaotic systems is the universal pattern of their energy levels — they have the same statistical properties as those of a random matrix. Black holes are quantum systems and they are highly chaotic, so we expect their energy levels to display this distinctive pattern. In simple models of black holes, like the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, we can trace this pattern to the existence of spacetime wormholes. We will discuss these ideas and some of the puzzles they raise.
