R.K. Kar Award for Research In Physics

We are pleased to announce the R.K. Kar Award for Research in Physics. This award is made possible by the generosity of Dr. Ramendra Kumar Kar's family and friends in honor of Dr. Kar's 75th birthday and his contributions to the field of physics, especially electronics and condensed matter physics. Dr. Kar has a tremendous respect for the Caltech physics department and especially the works of people like Robert Millikan, Murray Gell-Mann and Richard Feynman who have been affiliated with this department as faculty.

Born in Calcutta, India, Dr. Kar attended the University of Calcutta, where he received his Ph.D (1970) in physics. He then pursued his postdoctoral studies at Centre national d'etudes des telecommunications (CNET) in Paris (now known as Orange Labs). He has a long experience in teaching Physics at various Indian universities like Calcutta, Vishwa-Bharati, Jadavpur, Tripura and North Bengal. He has guided many doctorate students and has published in national and international journals and authored many books. In addition to his research and educational contributions, Dr. Kar provided crucial academic leadership in establishing the electronics research division in the University of Calcutta.

Criteria for the Award

The R.K. Kar Award for Research in Physics will be awarded annually by the Department of Physics to an outstanding graduate student who is exceptional in his/her physics studies and research (emphasis on condensed matter physics), toward the costs of travel and registration to attend scientific meetings or conferences, preferably related to condensed matter physics.

Terms of the Award

Travel assistance to physics graduate students for a conference (emphasis on conferences related to Condensed Matter Physics).

Eligibility

Any active graduate student at the time of the award in the Department of Physics is eligible.

Selection

A faculty committee will review the records of all eligible students for their scholastic abilities and research work with emphasis on condensed matter physics with preference for Indian descent or who are needy financially, and will send their recommendations to the Department Executive Officer, who will make the final decision.
