For centuries, cancer has been one of the most devastating human diseases. Papyrus writings from 1660 1500 BC describe cancer and attempts at its treatment. Given the long history of difficulties in developing cancer therapies, why is there excitement about nanoparticle medicines or nanomedicines for fighting cancer? Is it warranted or is it hype?

This lecture will present the current understanding of why nanoparticle medicines have the potential to change the way cancer is treated, including results from early human clinical trials that will be used to demonstrate some of the distinguishing features of nanomedicine therapeutics for cancer.

Mark E. Davis is the Warren and Katharine Schlinger Professor of Chemical Engineering at Caltech, and a member of the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the City of Hope.
