Mars has long fascinated humankind as a possible abode of life, a planet that has changed dramatically over time, and as a future destination for explorers. Starting with the 1996 launches of Mars Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor, an impressive flotilla of spacecraft has been placed in Mars's orbit or landed on its surface, including the still-operating Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance orbiters, the twin Mars Exploration Rovers, and Europe's Mars Express orbiter.

These missions are changing – again – our understanding of the planet's present climate and history. This talk showcases some fruits of these endeavors, including amazing detailed views of the Red Planet's atmosphere, surface, and subsurface.

Richard Zurek of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory serves as the Project Scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission.
