Joy Crisp: Spirit & Opportunity's Excellent Adventure in Mars Geology
Series: Earnest C. Watson Lecture Series
This event was digitally recorded and is available for viewing on the Caltech Theater site. The twin rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have been investigating two different areas on Mars, yielding numerous exciting discoveries since their landings in January 2004. The rovers have been used to read the record in the rocks and soils, to search for evidence of past liquid water, and to determine whether there were past environments on Mars favorable for life. Crisp will summarize the most important science findings from the rovers.
Dr. Crisp's talk will include the presentation of numerous 3-D images. 3-D glasses will be distributed to the audience.
Joy Crisp, Mars Exploration Rover Project Scientist, is a geologist with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, managed by Caltech. Prior to the Mars Exploration Rover mission, Crisp worked on NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission and on studies of Earth's volcanoes. A Colorado native, she holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and a Ph.D. in geology from Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.
